NO BRIEF CANDLE ~ Paul's Story

A married father of six, Paul was a corporate manager for most of his adult life, and his zeal for family, community service, spirituality and All-Things-Golf mirror many in his generation. His mother was an artist, one uncle drew the comic strip "Blondie" for years, and another uncle created "Flash Gordon," but Paul did not think about art seriously until he was 51, when a friend encouraged him to take up oil painting.

After a huge life transformation, echoing a thread of reinvention that runs throughout the film, Paul rediscovered his innate talent and has emerged as an accomplished portrait artist. Now retired, he spends much of his time painting. Alongside him, we trace the unfolding of a piece of art, both on the canvas and within the artist.

We also join him on some of his many avocations: a fundraiser and mentor for youth, coach of a college golf team, volunteer for a halfway house for men. Paul embodies civic engagement and intergenerational work - and the young people whose lives he has touched speak passionately about the positive role model he has become for them. And of course, he plays golf. Paul's warm, open demeanor takes the world in and generously gives back, as he transforms these "typical" pursuits with passion and compassion.
